At last, the temperatures have reached the 60s once again. The shadbush are in bloom, which signifies the abundance run of the herring in season.
The Aquinnah Public Library will host a story time at 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 14. At 2 p.m. they will host tips for photographing your dog with Lisa Vanderhoop. You supply the pooch and the camera/camera phone and Lisa provides the tips. This should be an interesting afternoon. What about photographing your pet goats?
The Martha’s Vineyard Museum docents will present a discussion of late historian and musician E. Gale Huntington at the Howes House on Monday, May 16 at 1:30. Always an interesting time.
Martha’s Vineyard Museum presents an evening of art and wine on Wednesday, May 18 with Traeger DiPietro. Gather friends and bring your favorite beer or wine, the museum will provide the painting supplies —and create a Vineyard painting with advice from an experienced Vineyard artist. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Morgan Learning Center in Vineyard Haven The cost is $20 for members, $250 for non-members. Space is limited and reservations are required. First Baptist Church in Vineyard Haven would like to invite one and all on Saturday, May 21 from 1 to 3 p.m. to their Annual Musical May Tea. Music will be provided by Martha Child, Philip Dietterich, Dorian Lopes and Mary-Jean Miner. There will be a hat contest and prizes awarded, bake and white elephant sales, and tea, sandwiches and cake served throughout the program. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12.
Congratulations to Aileen Mahoney for winning first place in sparring at the Worcester Classic on Saturday. Her brother Seamus won 3rd place in forms and 4th place in sparring. They were accompanied by their parents James and Melissa Mahoney.
Congratulations to Waylon Sauer for winning 2nd place in his age group at the 42nd annual Martha’s Vineyard Rod and Gun Club trout fishing derby. Waylon’s prize was a nice new fishing pole and a trophy. He was accompanied by his brother Amos and their grandfather Jeffrey Madison. Congratulations to Tate Buchwald who won a trophy for the largest fish in the other species category, winning with the largest pickerel. She was accompanied by her brother Corbin and by their parents Joel and Tamara Buchwald.
Greetings to one and all from Baron Von Peter Ochs from his home in Vienna, Austria. Peter and his wife Gudrun have had to postpone their most recent visit to Aquinnah and one that would find them here especially in time for town meeting. Due to a myriad of medical conditions, he is unable to travel at this time but extends greetings to his many friends, especially Anne and Cully Vanderhoop and Aron Jackson.
Condolences to the family and friends of Sal Laterra who passed away at Massachusetts General Hospital over the past week. Sal was the dear friend of Phyllis Meras and their friendship took them to many distant lands. He will be greatly missed at our next Vineyard Gazette gathering.
