The route changes each year, but the tradition has been in place since 1993 and is perhaps the best way to see the Island in its full, off-the-beaten-path glory. This year’s cross-Island hike is Saturday, June 4, beginning at 8 a.m.

The hike is in honor of National Trails Day, and hosted locally by the Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank. Last year the group of hardy trekkers began the day at the Chilmark Pond Preserve, and those who stuck it out until the end made it to Pecoy Point Preserve in Oak Bluffs, approximately 20 miles away.

This year’s hike begins where last year’s ended. After gathering at 8 a.m. at Pecoy Point Preserve hikers will walk towards Edgartown via trails behind the YMCA and through the Felix Neck wildlife preserve. After a walk through Edgartown down to Memorial Wharf it’s off to Chappaquiddick. From there the trail leads to Wasque and Norton Point, crossing over to Katama and then finally, after approximately 21-miles, ending at South Beach’s left fork. But walkers do not need to bite off the whole hike. Smaller morsels are also encouraged and anyone is invited to join the group at any time.
