Another mostly sun-filled week across the Vineyard with just a slight mist one morning and a little rain on Wednesday. As always there are many activities to enjoy despite the weather. Thanks to all who helped round up the pigs that got loose on Lighthouse Road Saturday night.

The pigs caused a little excitement over the weekend. Nathalie Gilfoyle noted that her neighbors rented pigs for a few days to clean up their poison ivy and other unwanted underbrush. Apparently the pigs got bored and dug under the fencing to escape and take a stroll on Lighthouse Road. This proved hazardous to the pigs and unaware drivers. With the help of the Aquinnah police the pigs were herded into Nathalie’s fenced garden to await the owners, who were out of cell range. The pigs did not go gently and made many efforts to escape. Our excellent Aquinnah police officers, David Murphy, Michael Leccese, Donald Scranton and of course Paul Manning, along with Charlie Thomas, kept them contained through a combination of human chain, brooms and food, while animal control officer Angie Waldron assured they stayed hydrated and healthy. After six hours, the pigs eventually went home with their owners Joe van Nes and Kristine Patnugot of Scapegoats Goatscaping and the Gilfoyle garden is in recovery. You never know what is going to happen next in Aquinnah. It is just another summer story, but Nathalie wanted to thank the police who worked with such grace and good humor.

Barbara Okun is celebrating her 80th birthday with family and friends in Aquinnah this weekend. Her sons Jeff and Doug along with Jeff’s wife Alison and Barbara’s son-in-law Josh Lieberman are here along with all seven of Barbara’s grandchildren (Amalia, Samantha, Michal, Alexandra, Aryeh, Elizabeth and Sophia) and her brother in law and sister in law, Phil and Nancy Okun. This is the 44th summer that Barbara has spent in Aquinnah.

Peter Pfluger has been the guest of Wendy Swolinsky for the past week and returned to his home in Florida over the weekend.

Sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Ruth Cronig Stiller, who passed away on Sunday. Ruth was always at the forefront of most events at the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center and with her smile and grace was always there to greet you. Ruth had many fond memories of attending the Tisbury School with our dad James Manning and would often relate a few stories of their school days. She was probably one of his last surviving fellow students. Ruth will be missed by many across the Vineyard for her work at Tisbury School, the Bunch of Grapes Bookstore with Ann Nelson, and especially at the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center.

Happy birthday wishes this week to Dr. Gerald Steinberg on July 17, who shares the day with Barbara Okun. Jed Smith will party on July 18, as will Constance Athearn Taylor. Wendy Weldon and Loretta Wolozin share the day on July 19. Susie Lana Shea celebrates on July 20 as does Laurie Perry Henry. Kendra Buresch celebrates on July 22 and shares the day with her daughter Oona, who will be 10 years old. Aquinnah police officer Steve Mathias celebrates on July 22, as does Charlene Alley.
