For 25 years now the Martha’s Vineyard Oar & Paddle Association has hosted the Oar & Paddle Regatta at State Beach during the last weekend of August. This year’s event is Sunday, August 28 starting at 10 a.m. at the Little Bridge on Sengekontacket Pond.

There are many divisions, many ages, and even non-human participants (dogs usually), for what has become and end of summer Island institution. The morning is essentially designed to spread the joy of kayaking, which then spreads the word about the need for clean waters.

The course is two miles in length and Island Spirit Kayaks is donating the kayaks, and other human-propelled watercraft, for the event. So there is no excuse. Just show up and get ready to row, paddle or otherwise.

Registration is $25, which includes a T-shirt and a post race picnic. All proceeds benefit local non-profits involved with conservation of local waters.
