Well Hermine did very little damage around the Vineyard, other than a few tree limbs hanging on utility wires. Only a few short power outages. The winds averaged in the 48 mph range. The last Labor Day storm I recall was in 1972, when Carrie caused considerable power outages and there were about 100 people invited for a lobster boil, which was happily enjoyed by all in attendance.

Finally I made it to Lucy Vincent Beach on Monday. It was nice to see Carol Gross before she returns to her home in Washington D.C. Also great to catch up with Jill Bernstein. The waves were threatening and no one was in the surf as it was a red flag day. There were about 80 people enjoying the windblown adventure while visiting with friends, sitting in their beach huts, and reading in their beach chairs. The cliff still stands!

Get well wishes to fellow Vineyard Gazette columnist Jane Slater, who has been not up to par over the past week with several trips to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. In the meantime, her sister in law Jane Neumann has been assisting Jane with the closure of Oversouth Antiques after 40 years. The 50 per cent off sale continues. Stop in and see the two Janes — they will be wearing their ribbons explaining which Jane is which and just who is who!
