Community housing needs will take center stage in Island towns this fall as work begins on the development of housing production plans.

A series of three public workshops are planned in each of the six towns beginning this month and continuing into December.

The housing production plan idea grew out of a series of meetings last year by a coalition of all the Island planning boards. A housing work group was formed with one representative from each town. Now, with the assistance of the Martha’s Vineyard Commission, a professional planning process will begin. Among other things the process will examine demographic changes, market conditions and how they affect the Island. Each town will be asked to develop its own strategy for addressing the housing issue. The interactive workshops will be professionally facilitated by consultants from RKG Associates Inc. and JM Goldson.

“Over the course of the three workshops each town will decide who it wants to help with housing, how much housing it needs and where does it want to build it,” a statement on the Martha’s Vineyard Commission website says.

The workshop schedule follows:

Aquinnah: Mondays at 7 p.m. on Sept. 19, Nov. 14 and Dec. 12 at the Old Town Hall, with a community dinner beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Chilmark: Wednesdays at 7 p.m. on Sept. 21, Nov. 16 and Dec. 14 at the Chilmark Library (December location to be decided).

Edgartown: Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 20, Nov. 15 and Dec. 13 in the Menemsha Room of the Harbor View Hotel.

Oak Bluffs: Wednesdays at 4 p.m. on Sept. 21 and Nov. 16 and Dec. 14 at the Loft (the December session begins at 3 p.m.).

Vineyard Haven: Thursdays at 6 p.m. on Sept. 22, Nov. 17 and Dec. 15 at the Tisbury Senior Center.
