Every broken iPhone has its own story. Tourists carelessly dropping their devices on Circuit avenue. Teenage kids forgetting to check their pockets before a quick swim. Pets mistaking the phone for a tasty treat. You name it. Anything Apple founder Louis Hall has heard them all.
Mr. Hall launched Anything Apple at his home office in Vineyard Haven nine years ago. An official Apple Certified Macintosh Technician, he initially focused his business on computer repairs, but began breaking down and fixing iPhones a few years back.
“I’ve always had a fascination with taking things apart,” he said, remembering the countless VCRs he destroyed as a child. His efforts to piece them back together often proved futile, much to his parents’ dismay.
“My mother would be upset, which made sense.”
Mr. Hall began his business while teaching 11th and 12th grade environmental science at the Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School — he recently moved over to the regional high school. In need of a second job, he turned to his childhood curiosity that culminated during his days at SUNY Oneonta. A real-life college nightmare introduced him to Macintosh computers during his sophomore year. Viruses wiped out the hard drive of his PC just days before the end of the semester. He lost everything. Even his final paper. Pleading with his father for a new computer, Mr. Hall received an iBook.
Mr. Hall’s skill with computers amazed his college classmates, he said, especially considering his majors were ecology and field biology. Soon enough his friends sought his services for their broken computers, a trend that continues to this day.
Repairing an iPhone takes anywhere between 15 minutes to two hours, Mr. Hall said. The time variation depends on the magnitude of damage. Salt water proves more corrosive than rain water. Power-port repairs need higher maintenance than a screen repair. Most iPhones vary in sizes and shape, altering the price for rarer iPhone models.
“The cool thing about my business is that I’m able to get third-party computer parts,” he said. Avoiding the expensive wholesale price offered by Apple, Mr. Hall has the freedom to buy the most affordable supplies from a variety of proprietors.
