Surveys of a future wind energy site south of Martha’s Vineyard are beginning Sept. 23, according to a notice to fishermen.

OffshoreMW, which is leasing part of the BOEM Massachusetts wind energy area in the ocean south of the Vineyard, began a reconnaissance geophysical survey on Sept. 23, the company said in a notice. The survey vessel R/V Shearwater will gather data on the seabed and seafloor conditions as well as work on identifying potential locations for future offshore wind turbine sites.

The survey work is expected to last 30 days.

According to the notice, the research vessel will mostly sail in parallel northeast/southwest lines, with additional lines running perpendicular in the northwest/southeast direction. Most of the work will be done in the northeast portion of the wind energy area. A map and more information is available at offshoremwllc.com.

OffshoreMW said this is the first step of data collection and assessment that will continue for the next several years, and the company is committed to working with local fishermen during the development of the proposed wind farm.
