Eleanor (Terry) Hunt Burke died on Sept. 25 in Bellaire, Mich. She was 82.
Terry was born July 11, 1934 in Grand Rapids, the daughter of Irving and Eleanor Burke. She graduated from East Grand Rapids High School. She attended Wellesley College and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Michigan and a master’s degree from Columbia Teachers College in New York city.
She was a guidance counselor for 13 years at the Columbia High School in Maplewood, N.J., followed by 17 years at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School in Oak Bluffs.
After retiring in 1993 Terry was an active volunteer with the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber Music Society and the board of Martha’s Vineyard Community Services.
She was a member of the Harvard Institute For Learning in Retirement and the Federated Church in Edgartown. She loved books, traveling and her lifelong friends, most especially Hilary Snell.
Terry is survived by her sister, Betsy Burke Peterson; her nieces, Kelly Peterson and Michele Berres and her husband John; and her nephew James Peterson and his wife Joanna.
Her family is grateful to the wonderful caregivers at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility and Heartland Hospice.
Her memorial service will be held on Thursday, Sept. 29 at 2 p.m. at the Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Service in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Memorial contributions may be made in Terry’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association, alz.org.
