The weather has remained rather pleasant over the past week, other than a couple of much-needed rainy days. Still great fishing weather for the derby. September has been the best weather for Vineyard weddings over the past few weekends in each and every town.

At the Aquinnah Public Library this week, story time is at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1 and from 11 to 3 p.m. is Kids Craft: Newspaper Sharks. After School Club is on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 4 p.m.

At the Aquinnah Cultural Center there will be house tours Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. At 3 p.m. guest speaker Professor Amy Den Ouden will discuss Indigenous Women, Colonial Violence, and Histories of Resistance in Southern New England” She will look at the case of Pequot woman Katherine Garrett, who was indentured to a minister in Connecticut and accused of committing infanticide, in the context of 18th century Mohegan land claims, Indian slavery and indentured servitude. On Saturday, Oct. 1 Kitty Hendricks-Miller from the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe will present a traditional 17th century cooking demonstration, roasting a fish over the open fire and preparing a pot of sopaheek (soup or stew) topped with boiled bread with cranberries She will also demonstrate food preparation methods and talk about traditional gardens and other ways food was obtained.

This is the last week to see Our Story: 400 Years of Wampanoag History, at the cultural center through Oct. 5. The exhibit looks at little-known early 17th century history and the impact of European settlement on the Wampanoag and other native peoples. Dr. Joseph Harrington and his wife Evelyn returned to their home in Andover this week after a visit with her son Jason Widdiss and his family. Get well wishes to Evelyn as she undergoes surgery next week.

Theresa and Noah Manning returned home on Sunday after spending a long weekend in Pleasant Valley, N.Y. with his grandparents Bill and Joan Kistner. Theresa and Joan attended a lovely baby shower for niece/granddaughter Alison Kistner Pitcairn on Saturday.

Dr. Helen Mays and her travelling companion Julian returned to Washington, D.C. on Tuesday after spending the past week visiting many of her family members and friends. This was Julian’s first visit to the Vineyard.

Barry and Dottie Sullivan are delighted to have their son Patrick and his wife Donna visiting for 10 days with their two boys, Caden and Brecken. Brecken will be baptized on Oct. 1 at St. Elizabeth’s. They will have many family members here for the event and are looking forward to happy times with everyone visiting.

Evelyn Churchill Vanderhoop recently visited with her daughter Tiffany and Jason Widdiss and their children Brian, Maysel, Novella and Carl. While here, Evelyn enjoyed lunch at the Aquinnah Shop with Evelyn Harrington, Patti Colligan, and Rachel Vanderhoop Sweet.

Jason Widdiss and Tiffany Vanderhoop returned home after a weekend visit with his mother Evelyn and her husband Dr. Joseph Harrington in Andover.
