The driver of a car that flipped over on State Road in West Tisbury Saturday is facing charges for driving under the influence, West Tisbury police said. On Sunday morning West Tisbury police Sgt. Skipper Manter 3rd identified the driver as Jessica Elsasser, 32, of Vineyard Haven.

She was taken to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital with unknown injuries following the single-car crash late Saturday afternoon.

Tri-town ambulance and West Tisbury fire were called to the scene on State Road between Old Courthouse Road and Fiddlehead Farm, at about 4:15 Saturday. Ms. Elsasser was the lone occupant of a 2011 Toyota Rav 4 when it went off the road, flipped over and hit a guy-wire utility pole. No electric wires were involved, police Sgt. James Neville said late Saturday following the crash.

Sergeant Manter said Ms. Elsasser has been cited for driving under the influence of alcohol, negligent operation and failure to stay within marked lanes. A summons will be issued, and she has the option of requesting a hearing with the district court clerk magistrate, he said.

No information was immediately available about the nature or extent of injuries or whether she had been admitted to the hospital.

The accident tied up traffic in both directions for about an hour Saturday. Chilmark provided backup for traffic control.
