Chilmark is hunkered down and dark today as I write, raining hard and with a gray aspect to the world. Oh well, a chance for us to recharge our batteries and for me to make some corrections on upcoming dates.

The Chilmark Community Church plans to hold a flea market on Dec. 10 at the Community Center in Chilmark. It will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and feature the famous Chilmark Church lobster rolls as well as other food choices including chowder. Some of the popular summer vendors will be set up as well as others. Remember to shop locally.

There is another activity worth noting on Dec. 10. The Vineyard Classic Brass Ensemble will perform a holiday concert at 3:30 p.m. at the library. The concert is free and all are welcome. The talented Dunkl family of Chilmark generously preforms annually for our enjoyment.

Remember that the special town meeting is on Monday, Dec. 5 at 7:30 p.m. at the community center. Every vote counts so come out and vote your choices.

The semi-annual book sale at the Chilmark library will begin on Dec. 13 with prices dropping to half price on Dec. 20, and then all will be free from Dec. 27 thru Jan. 4 when the sale ends. The sale is held during regular library hours. Full price is hardcover $1 and paperbacks 25 cents.

The Chilmark Library will host the annual holiday party from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Dec. 14. It is a very popular get together for food and chat to set the holiday mood for many Chilmarkers. All are welcome.

I am sorry I wasn’t able to call your attention to this event earlier, but it is worth chronicling. The Chilmark School students will construct a Peace Tree to honor the many cultures and faiths around the world. This will take place on Friday, Dec. 2. I do not have the time so please call the school for details. The Peace Tree is one way they chose to celebrate peace, diversity and hope throughout the seasons.

The Chilmark Library will host the artwork of Anne Cook from Dec. 3 to Jan. 6. There will be receptions on Dec. 3 from 2 to 4 p.m., and Dec. 7 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. She will be displaying pastel and oil landscapes of the Vineyard. Anne is an accomplished artist and the daughter of Peter and Sally Cook of South Road.

The dredging project moves slowly forward. Some sand was moved this week. A good sign.

Scalloping continues to be good with fishermen getting their quotas within reasonable time frames. The deer are everywhere. Do be careful driving as the shotgun season is underway and that sends the deer into erratic daytime activities.

Arlo Roger Allen-Posin is settling in nicely as the most recent member of the Allen –Posin family at the Allen Farm on South Road. Arlo was born on the farm on Oct. 16 to Kaila and Nathaniel Allen-Posin, and was welcomed by all including his sister, Tavola. Arlo is the great grandson of Catherine and Roger Allen who lived on the farm as the family has since the 1700s. Roger was a valued builder and was a selectman of Chilmark for 34 years. Arlo’s grandparents are Mitchell and Clarissa. Cheers to all.

The Allen Farm shop is open most days this time of year for your holiday shopping. The selections are diverse and the items perfect for all ages and sizes. Please call ahead for times but the sign is out most days now.

Caleb Slater is in town this week working at the deer weigh-in station in Oak Bluffs and finding some time to hunt too. Caleb works for the Massachusetts Fish and Wildlife.
