The cost of resident parking permits in Tisbury is going up.
At their meeting Tuesday, selectmen voted to raise the price of parking permits from $25 to $50. All-day parking permits are available for town residents who live on certain streets in the Spring street area downtown.
The selectmen also discussed raising the fees for Owen Park permits from $10 to $50, but took no action. Four 24-hour parking spots in Owen Park are reserved for permit holders. Permit holders must have a boat that is moored in Vineyard Haven harbor, and the parking spots can only be used while the holder is using his or her boat.
Selectman Tristan Israel said he was not in favor of the four permitted parking spots.
“This becomes for a privileged few people, who most of the other boaters that are there seem to be able to figure out how to get to their boat and do their thing,” Mr. Israel said. “I just have some issues with this whole thing.”
About 20 stickers were sold last year for Owen Park. Revenue from the permits goes toward the harbor budget. The stickers are valid for seven months, beginning in April.
Discussion about the issue will continue with the town parking committee before returning to the selectmen.
In other business Tuesday, selectmen approved a variety of taxi license changes. The license for Able Taxi was transferred from Robert Saggese to Ecton Strawn, and All Island Taxi relinquished its license. Meanwhile, Bluefish Taxi was granted a new license for six cabs.
“Make sure to take care of Tisbury people first, that’s the most important thing,” said Mr. Israel, addressing the taxi company owners who attended the meeting.
Selectmen voted to reappoint Benjamin Robinson to the Martha’s Vineyard Commission. They approved a reserve fund transfer for emergency engine repairs for interim harbor master John Crocker, pending his appearance before the finance committee. The repairs are estimated to cost between $8,000 and $12,000.
The selectmen also signed a design contract for the feasibility study portion of the Massachusetts School Building Authority project at the Tisbury elementary school, pending review by the town attorney.
