Another northeaster is predicted for Thursday. Just when we thought that winter was over. The temperatures have been in the 40s all week. There has been no freezing of the ground and no sign of frost heaves thus far. Spring is getting a little closer.

Today is a day of reflection for the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah). It was 30 years ago today that President Ronald Reagan granted our tribe federal acknowledgement. We have viewed many changes in these three decades. If I only had time to publish my book My Tribe and Tribulations!

On Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Aquinnah library there will be a sparkly Valentine craft. The after school club meets Tuesday at 4 p.m., and at 5 p.m., you can make Valentine cards, and then indulge in a chocolate tasting.

Martha’s Vineyard Community Services has great programing this winter. On Friday, from 9:30 to 11 a.m., they will kick off an eight-week interactive and research-based program called Raising a Thinking Child. It will be led by Kim D’Arcy and Jean Crocker, and held at the family center in Vineyard Haven. Free childcare is available and preregistration is required at 508-687-9182.

Stories & Pajamas will be held at the Island Wide Youth Collaborative this Saturday at 1 pm. They invite children for an afternoon of reading stories in their PJs. Bring your favorite books to read aloud, or enjoy a cozy space to read to yourself. Children of all ages welcome.

Lisa Bibko-Vanderhoop will have a sale of her Vineyard Seadogs cards and calendars on Saturday, Feb. 11 at the Island Images Gallery at 56 Circuit Avenue in Oak Bluffs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lisa will be joined by Gwen Nichols with her exquisite wampum jewelry, by Shari Grunden and her pottery, Stephanie Rossi and her sister Tania Tilton with a collection of silk flowers, and Beth with many scented items.

Suzanne Crowley has returned from a recent visit to Iceland. There are many Vineyarders making the trek to Iceland these days and enjoying the breathtaking sites.

I finally had a chance to catch up with Bob Lane the other day. Bob and his cohorts from the Martha’s Vineyard Surfcasting Club wanted to send a care package to a Vineyarder serving overseas. Army Sgt. Kevin Devine and his group were the lucky recipients. Kevin is on his sixth deployment to the Middle East. Thank you to the generosity of the surfcasters who were joined by the Martha’s Vineyard Bass and Bluefish Derby Committee in providing the items for the care package, and thank you to VFW Post 9261 in Oak Bluffs for providing the postage to send the items. A huge thank you all the way around.
