After about a month of practices — dodging the spring rains, embracing the cold if need be — the Little League season truly began earlier this week with games each day for the minor and major leagues. But although the cleats are already dirty and the mitts broken in, the official opening day ceremony is this Saturday, April 29. This is the moment when the entire baseball loving community steps out into the open with a parade down Circuit avenue beginning at 9:30 a.m. by the police station.

Just try and watch with dry eyes all the kids dressed in full uniform, from T-ball tyke to the 12-year-old major leaguers, as they parade through Oak Bluffs. No chance of that.

After the parade everyone heads over to Penn Field to introduce all the teams and their coaches. The ceremony begins at 10:30 a.m. And then it’s time to play ball, with the kids spread out at the various Island ballparks. Catch the action at Penn Field, Viera Park, the Edgartown School and West Tisbury fire station.
