Spring may have sprung but the temperature dropped to the 30s overnight on Monday. Have you noticed the fiddleheads along the byways? Shadbush have blossomed, signifying the return of herring at the run. Lilacs are in bloom about three weeks ahead of schedule.
Springtime is still on the minds of the staff at Aquinnah Public Library. On Saturday, May 13 at 10:30 a.m. is story time and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. is spring coloring. The library will have a table at the Mini Maker Faire at the Ag Hall Saturday, making prints using Styrofoam. On Tuesday, May 16 at 4 p.m. is After School Club.
One of the latest books to hit the market over the past month is The Foundling by Paul Joseph Fronczak, with his story of using DNA to search for his biological family. The Aquinnah library will be the first on the Vineyard to have this fascinating book available.
On Saturday, May 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Ag Hall, join the Martha’s Vineyard Museum at the second annual MV Mini Maker Faire, and explore Alternative Artifacts, a hands-on brainstorming experience that the whole family will enjoy. The faire is a family friendly event to make, create, learn, invent, craft, think, play, celebrate, and be inspired by science, technology, arts, engineering, and math. Free and open to all.
Felix Neck is in need of volunteers for horseshoe crab survey training on May 17 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Free. Surveys are conducted during the new and full moons of May and June. Volunteers are expected to attend training and complete two surveys.
Martha’s Vineyard Community Services and Bruno’s will sponsor the semi-annual electronics disposal day on May 20 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the MVCS campus. Time to clean out your attics, basements, and garages and recycle electronic equipment and scrap metal. Recycle old computers, televisions, laptops, air conditioners and more for a small fee while supporting the programs at Community Services.
The MV Partnership for Health is scheduling new groups for My Life My Health chronic condition self-management program. This program can help control risk for diabetes and manage it long-term, reduce blood pressure, depression, and pain, use the emergency room less and have fewer hospitalizations. Congratulations to Kenan Chaplin and Aloki Patel who were married on Saturday in Connecticut. Kenan is the son of Pamela Vanderhoop and grandson of Mrs. Jewel Vanderhoop and the late Arnold Vanderhoop. Their wedding was attended by many former Aquinnah neighbors.
Congratulations to Kenneth Ivory, who has served Martha’s Vineyard Hospital for 42 years on May 13. Of course, it is a job that requires not only his great skills but a great sense of humor as well!
Noah Manning returned home on Monday after spending the weekend in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. with his grandparents Bill and Joan Kistner. The Kistners arrived from California, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts to celebrate a milestone birthday for Michael Kistner. A wonderful surprise for Mike. Noah was accompanied by his parents Paul and Theresa.
Welcome home to Capt. Hugh Taylor and Jeanne from their winter on Elizabeth Island in the Caribbean. Their Outermost Inn will open on May 19 and the Menemsha bike ferry schedule will begin in a month.
Spa Tharpe reminded me that his daughter Linnea was the New Year baby born at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital on Jan. 1, 1981. At the time, they resided at the late Maysel Vanderhoop’s property.
Jerry Wiener and Carolyn Feltz returned recently from a relaxing visit to New Jersey with family and friends. They visited their son Jesse and his wife Maggie at their Manhattan home as well.
Sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Capt. Michael Brown, who passed away in Maryland on May 4, a schoolmate to many who moved here in the 1960s while his late father Thomas Brown served as a state trooper. Michael went on to have a rewarding career in the Coast Guard. He is survived by his wife Ellie and their children, as well as by his mother, Rosemary Brown, his sister Tommye Ann Irwin, and his brother Stephen.
