If you’re in the market for art, now might be a good time to buy. The Friends of Family Planning Fundraiser and Art Show takes place this weekend at the Agricultural Hall, from May 25 through May 28. The event continues an annual tradition that brings together Island artists in support of Family Planning’s work of providing affordable reproductive health care on the Island.
This year, as the federal government threatens the availability of and access to such care, the event’s organizers feel an added sense of urgency. The art show is the organization’s only major fundraiser, making it a critical opportunity for the clinic to secure funds for the upcoming year.
Nili Beth Morgan, vice president of Friends of Family Planning MV and member of the Art Show Committee, said that this year’s show will match the clinic’s outsize mission. Close to 90 artists will have work in the show.
This typifies the outpouring of support that Family Planning MV has received so far. “We’re really excited with the amount of participation this year, given the uncertainty of political climate,” Ms. Morgan said. “The Island community is really stepping up to support this local clinic.”
Vineyarders have also gotten involved through volunteering, joining the Friends board and donating to the clinic.
Family Planning MV will receive at least 50 per cent of all art sales from this weekend. Previewing the show, Ms. Morgan said, “Any modality that you can think of that somebody can create, we show it at the Family Planning art show.”
She mentioned Alison Shaw’s photographs, Jeanie Hay Sternbach’s jewelry, Wendy Weldon’s oil paintings and Debbie Hale’s pottery as a few highlights.
The show will be held in the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury. Tickets to the opening night fundraiser, held on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m., are $50. The show will be free and open to the public on Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
