The Fuel Assistance Program has opened for applications. All Island residents who did not receive an application in the mail and think they qualify are encouraged to apply. The South Shore Community Action Council, which administers the program, announced information and income guidelines this week.

Applications will be taken through April 30, 2018.

New applicants must provide proof of income for the past 30 days for all household members over 18, picture identification, proof of citizenship (social security card, birth certificate or valid U.S. passport) and proof of street address. Households that have used the same primary heat source for at least 12 months should bring copies of their heating bills for the 12 months prior to application for a potentially higher benefit level. For clients in an emergency situation that have a utility shutoff notice or whose utilities are shut off, income and other information must be brought into the office in order to receive emergency assistance.

Eligibility is based on income and household size. The maximum income guidelines are: $34,380 (one person), $44,958 (two persons), $55,537 (three persons), $66,115 (four persons), and $76,693 (five persons).

Eligibility for fuel assistance also provides 12 months of discounts on electric, natural gas and Verizon telephone bills. Eligibility for free weatherization and heating system repairs is also possible. New clients can apply at the Dukes County Administration Building, 9 Airport Road in Edgartown (call 508-696-3844 for an appointment); the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head, 20 Black Brook Road, Aquinnah (call 508-645-9265 extension 130 Monday through Friday, 9 to 5 p.m. for an appointment). Clients of Martha’s Vineyard Community Services can call 508-696-7563 to make an appointment. Senior citizens can also call their local councils on aging.
