When Dick Fligor began his junior year at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, a classmate greeted him and said, with enthusiasm, “Dick, if you want to have the summer of your life, get a job on Martha’s Vineyard.” Dick sent in his application and thought no more about it.
Lo and behold, in the spring,he received a letter from The Colonial Inn, Edgartown, with an offer to join the staff for the summer of 1957.
In early June, Dick and two other young people were the first to arrive. That night, Mrs. Chirgwin said to Carol, “You’re going to love the boy from Ohio!” The next day, Carol took the newcomers on a tour of the Vineyard. It did not take long for Carol to agree with her mother. It was the summer of their lives.
Carol and Dick were married on Feb. 6, 1958 in Naples, Fla., where her parents lived in the winter. Carol was part of Dick’s last semester in college and then it was back to Martha’s Vineyard for all the rest of his summers.
