I don’t know about the rest of you but this whole spring ahead has left what seems like half my brain behind. I feel as if I am suffering jet lag or perhaps a mild hangover even though I don’t drink. Although Daylight Saving Time seems like a slightly archaic tradition that serves very little purpose in my day to day life I suppose the energy savings in my household combined with millions of others adds up to something beneficial. Thanks be to the sun.
As I sit at the computer I can hear the cows mooing at the Grey Barn despite the rhythmic whine of the winds ramping up in anticipation of yet another storm. It is Monday night, March 12, and a blizzard warning goes into effect at 11 p.m. I will ward off any power outages by submitting my column a tad early, running a quick load of laundry and baking a batch of box brownies. By the time you read this, the barometric pressure should have risen right along with spring like temperatures.
Today, Friday March 16, Connie McCreery celebrates a birthday. The octogenarian club welcomes you graciously.
Monday was marked by an interesting event. It was the first trip a fire truck made over the Squibnocket causeway. Fire Chief David Norton took tanker 133 for a test ride and, although it was tight, he squeezed his way across without a hitch.
Congratulations to Steve Flanders and Sally Anderson who tied the knot in a private ceremony Feb. 14 in Brewster. Despite the chill in the air, they enjoyed three days touring the Outer Cape while resting their heads in the welcoming town of Provincetown.
Congratulations to Corrick Slavin and all of his hockey team buddies for their end of the season tournament win. According to his folks, Dardy (Muldaur) and Sean, Corrick always hustled and gave the game his all. I spotted him on the field this past weekend for the first all-Island lacrosse practice. My guess is he’s pretty excited about all that spring sports has to offer.
Also on the lacrosse field this past weekend working the cobwebs out were high schoolers, Andrew Karlinsky, Hunter Ponte and Brooks Carroll. Eighth grader Graham Stearns will be playing this year as well but was in Warwick, R.I. with his bantam hockey team taking home a win. What sealed the deal was defeating Nantucket in triple, yes triple, overtime. Cheers to a great season.
Mary, Perry and Gabriel Ambulos escaped snowy New England for the white sandy beaches of Aruba. Gabe, a senior at Milton Academy, like many other high school seniors, enjoyed a break from the stresses of college applications.
A big bravo goes out to the Chilmark School PTO for hosting, yet another, truly enjoyable fundraising party. The CCC was decked out with twinkling lights, generous auction items, the excitement of Johnny Hoy & the Bluefish and a wonderful opportunity to get out of the house and socialize without having to cross town lines. Although disappointed that there wasn’t more of a community turn out — after all, it’s primarily to fund the kids remarkable outing program — Beth and Chris Wike, John and Hillary Keene, Peter Keene and Emily Drazen, Kendra Buresch and Chris Carroll, Dan and Meg Athearn, Susie Anderson and Nick Bologna, Ben and Nicole Cabot, Keith Fenner, Caroline Flanders, and many other parents and friends wore smiles on their faces and spoke with excitement about the remarkable Chilmark School community.
Max Hart, formerly of Chilmark now residing in Madison, N.J., happened to be on the Vineyard with his lovely little ladies, Hazel and Bea, for a quick visit to Uncle Sam and Aunt Laura Hart’s house. Max made it to the PTO fundraiser and managed to connect with a group of childhood friends.
I don’t typically extend birthday wishes unless it’s truly noteworthy number but I cannot pass up the opportunity to publicly call out my best friend, Marshall Carroll. On March 19, 1969 he was born alongside Patrick Jenkinson. It was a regular party at the MV Hospital maternity ward that day many years ago. Congratulations to Kathie, Emmett, Joannie and Pat for raising wonderful boys into amazing men.
