High praise for the Edgartown harbor master’s office was one theme from this week’s board of selectmen meeting.
Between appointing a new police chief and an update on the Yellow House, selectmen gave harbor master Charlie Blair high marks in his annual review.
“We’re never going to let you go,” chairman Arthur Smadbeck said. “What an amazing job you’ve done through all these storms. We’re very lucky to have you.”
Mr. Blair took the opportunity to praise his employees. “You’re only as good as your team is,” he said. “I have a really good team behind me and they make it happen...our team is so strong and makes me look good.”
“Charlie minimizes what he does,” selectman Margaret Serpa said. “We appreciate that and you do a good job.”
Mr. Blair gave an update about deputy harbor master Mike Hathaway, who was injured last week in a mishap while a boat was being moved at the town highway barn. Mr. Hathaway is out of the ICU and will soon move to the Spaulding rehabilitation center in Sandwich, Mr. Blair said.
“He has a lot of visitors,” Mr. Blair said. “He’s been on his phone daily. We’ve fielded over 200 calls about him from all over the world. It’s just amazing. This guy was our ambassador. For 23 years on the harbor I don’t think he’s ever said no to anybody. He’s sorely missed.”
Mr. Blair said he visited him this weekend and Mr. Hathaway’s sons and his friends have also been visiting.
“He’s got a long road ahead of him. He was severely injured, but he’s strong as a bull.”
