Spring has arrived although one would never know it around here. It is now mid-week and we are expecting the fourth northeaster in three weeks. Most of us are still recovering from the blizzard just a week ago with many trees, wires and poles knocking out power in Aquinnah for 32 hours.

One hundred per cent of Aquinnah was without electricity, telephone, cable and internet. Well, maybe a few in town have generators at home. A few Lighthouse Road neighbors went to stay at the Mansion House, others went to the Clarion Hotel, and then there were those that went to stay with family and friends down-Island.

By Wednesday morning a week ago, Aquinnah Ranger Tyler Moreis went to tribal elders homes to take them to the tribal administration building that Durwood Vanderhoop had opened up as a warming place. Kudos to Tyler and Woody. The Aquinnah town hall had a few elders seeking warmth as well. Let’s see what this week brings. Gale force winds are predicted and a snowfall of half a foot. In the old days, the 1940s, we lived our daily lives without electricity as we were the last town in the commonwealth of Massachusetts to be electrified and that was in February 1951. We managed quite well with kerosene lanterns, candles, wood burning stoves for heat and cooking, fireplaces, ice boxes and outdoor plumbing. We have certainly come a long way since those days of yore.

Thank you to all of the police, firefighters, emergency medical personnel, highway departments, USCG Station Menemsha, Eversource and the off-Island electric companies that came to assist, Verizon, Comcast, as well as the arborists.

The Martha’s Vineyard Center for Living will have an open house on Sunday, March 25 from 4 to 6 p.m. at 29 Breakdown Lane in Tisbury. There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony and refreshments will be served.

Eileen Sullivan, on Tar Barrel Hill, notes that in celebration of spring and our beloved Pinkletinks, she has written two children’s interactive eBooks. They can be viewed apinkletinksmv.com. The books are a start of a series about an adorable frog named Peter Pinkletink.

Sincerest condolences to the family and friends of William A. Merry who passed away on March 17 at Massachusetts General Hospital. Billy was known for his beautiful stone masonry and the ability to build the best in stonewalls over the decades. After a few years of being away, he returned to the Vineyard, catching up with old friends, enjoying family gatherings with his large extended family and assisting those in need of cheering with a bouquet of flowers or an armful of vegetables. His tales will long be remembered.

Across the channel at USCG Station Menemsha, the crew and many friends will bid Adam Struyk, his wife Elizabeth and their one year old Vineyard born son Landon Tyler Struyk a fond farewell this week after their three year stint on the Vineyard. Adam will head to USCG Air Station Elizabeth City in North Carolina for six months of training to become an aviation survival technician and helicopter rescue swimmer. From there, he is not sure where he will be stationed. All the best to them.

BM3 Joel Behr has headed to the West Coast for training in heavy weather training.

Amy Macey will party on March 31 as well.
