This is school break week. Many families headed for America, on a working boat, of course. I’m proud to be with the staycation crowd. Mary Afton, Shane True and Skylar Amaral coated my kitchen counters with cornstarch and food dye as they made play dough, goop and slime. Much candy was consumed by all, although I always have apples available.

Speaking of Shane Vanderhoop True, he and his classmates from the West Tisbury School traveled to the State House last Friday to receive a citation for their work in founding and operating Safe Sea MV. The award was signed by the president of the state senate, Harriet L. Chandler. Shane is the young student I wrote about last week who spoke at town meeting. The kids are all right.

Sunday library hours are no longer until after Columbus Day weekend. The library continues with its many fascinating programs.

Wasn’t that some run in Boston last Monday? To see Des Linden capture the flag for American women after 33 years was perfect for our times, and in spite of the weather. I do so admire every participant.

Sean Gannon was a stellar young man, a police officer and friend to all. Several of our Island officers attended his funeral Wednesday. We are heartbroken for his wife and family and ripped up about the loss Nero, his K9 partner is feeling. Never forget these two officers.

The Vineyard Playhouse has had its last Monday night movie until the high season is over. Thanks go to Island Entertainment and the Playhouse for providing this wonderful interlude. Sarah Moore’s Simply Bold art is on display there for viewing and for sale. The Playhouse is also presenting another Wicked Good Musical Revue under the direction of Molly Conole. I have missed the annual Chili Fest fundraiser for Red Stocking for four years. No longer. This popular event has been moved from winter to Saturday, May 5 from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the P.A. Club. Actually, at the rate our weather is going, May 5 this year might still be a winter event. Professional and amateur cooks need to get applications in. For information, visit BIGCHILIFEST.com. Congratulations to Jesse Seward who received an award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, Boston-New England chapter. Jesse’s work as a performer and narrator in Assassin Nation garnered him an outstanding recognition in both categories. Dad David and Mom Jenny are thrilled.

The birthday bandwagon pulled along Eleanor Hebert on April 19. And on April 25 Lorraine Clark takes the cake. Many happy returns.
