The Chappy ferry will begin operating on the summer schedule beginning on the Thursday before the Memorial Day weekend, May 24. On the summer schedule, the ferry operates continuously from 6:45 a.m. through midnight, weather permitting. To schedule early trips from Chappy, see the ferry captain in person before 5 p.m. on the day before your early trip. Payment in advance of the additional fee is required.
The ferry has been exceptionally busy as Memorial Day approaches. Suddenly the deadline for completing all of the projects promised to homeowners last fall has arrived. Plumbers especially have been turning out in numbers to fix the broken pipes caused by the early hard freezes of last winter. Lawn mowing equipment and truckloads of sod have made up a good portion of the ferry line. More than 50 tons of mulch were hauled over to Chappy during the past week by various gardeners and caretakers.
Blooms are busting out all over at Mytoi. The rhododendron are popping and it should be beautiful in the garden this weekend. Nine volunteers from the Sierra Club were there last week and did a lot of the raking and heavy work. Unfortunately, the Trustees have not found a gardener for this season. Talk about a golden opportunity for someone with the desire to do gardening big time. If anyone is interested in volunteering in the garden, most any day, contact Lindsay at Lindsay.allison@sothebysrealty.com and she will meet you and work with you.
The big bridge was taken out by a falling pitch pine so can’t be crossed, but a pair of mallards has taken advantage of the lack of people on the bridge and she is sitting on about a dozen eggs. Hopefully, they will hatch and will quickly grow big enough so the snapping turtles won’t take them.
Dancers from The Yard will perform in the garden this Saturday, May 26 at 1 p.m. This improvised performance marks the The Yard’s first public presentation every summer. Enjoy a stroll through Mytoi and enjoy pop-up performances of contemporary dance taking place throughout the garden. Come experience Mytoi in a whole new way. Refreshments will be provided.
A memorial gathering for Edo Potter will be celebrated at the Pimpneymouse farmhouse on Saturday June 2 beginning at 2 p.m. Sharing of memories and refreshments will follow. Vans will be provided at the ferry point for folks coming over on foot. Please make donations in Edo’s memory to the Chappy Fund c/o Sheriff’s Meadow, P.O. Box 1088, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568 or sheriffsmeadow.org. In the designation/memo space online, please designate “Chappy Fund.” Edo died January 24 at age 91.
