A $141,500 state grant announced last week will go to pedestrian infrastructure projects in West Tisbury. Gov. Charlie Baker announced the grant as part of some $6.4 million in Department of Transportation funds that are being distributed for the state’s Complete Streets program.

The funds will go to 22 communities throughout the commonwealth.

The West Tisbury grant will go toward creating an ADA compliant crosswalk near the West Tisbury School and upgrading parking and pedestrian access at Lambert’s Cove Beach.

“This is great news for West Tisbury,” selectman and board chairman Cynthia Mitchell said in an email this week. She congratulated the town planning board and the Complete Streets committee for their work.” We strongly support their vision of greater accessibility and safety for pedestrians and cyclists in our town,” Mrs. Mitchell said.

Plans include repainting the crosswalk on Old County Road at the school for better visibility. More yield signs and curb ramps for accessibility are also planned. A path will be built connecting the crosswalk to the entrance of the state forest on the northbound side of Old County Road.

Students have been observed crossing Old County Road diagonally to access the entrance to the State Forest, according to the town application for the funds. The new crosswalk and connecting path aim to curb that behavior. That project is estimated to cost $24,400.

At Lambert’s Cove, the town plans to expand parking and provide crosswalks for pedestrians parked across the road from the beach entrance. The project looks to address safety concerns about beachgoers crossing the winding road with limited sight distance. The project is estimated to cost $117,100, and will include a removable seasonal crosswalk.

The state launched the Complete Streets program in 2016, a transportation initiative that aims to better accommodate pedestrians and cyclists of all ages and abilities on streets and roads.

Oak Bluffs and Tisbury have also participated in the program.
