Well, September is slipping away as quick as you can say Jack Frost! It had been warm for this time of year but a touch of fall (that begins Saturday) is in the air. The ducks and geese have begun their trek southward and, for years, that has included a brief rest stop in the Mill Pond to relax and refresh. Colleen Morris reminds you that Tuesday is national comic book day so Paul Karasik, nationally-known cartoonist, take notice.
Dr. Bruce Carlton and Julia Roundy, of California, arrive at his State Road home on Sunday with three house guests. Bruce, an avid fisherman, will be taking part in the derby. He will find the time to give their guests a personal tour of the Island.
James and Diane Pagnotti, of Old Forge, Pa., returned home last Saturday after spending a week on the Vineyard celebrating their 14th wedding anniversary. Diane reports that they enjoyed the weather, beaches, dining out and traveling around the Island. They met up with old friends and thoroughly enjoyed themselves and may rent in Chilmark again next season as it seemed to them secluded and quiet.
Phyllis Meras of Music street returned home last Friday after a business trip down to New York city. She had time to visit a few old before leaving the city. Naomi Plakins of Middle Road hosted Anna and me at a cookout at her house Saturday afternoon. Jen Wool, who lives on South Road, was visited by her friend, Kim Barlett, of Burlington, Vt. last week. She reports that they enjoyed Tivoli Day, walking on the beach, swimming, sightseeing and shopping. She also reports that up at the Blue Barque on South Road, she and Dan Leventritt are excited about the visit by Dan’s aunts from Chicago. Maxine and Barbara Durst will spend the week reminiscing about their last visit to the Barque in the 1960s and sharing their love of art and politics on the porch swing at Alley’s.
Susan and Barbara Silk are hosting an invitation-only house party tomorrow celebrating 10 years in their home.
At a recent dedication ceremony in Quincy of the Hancock/Adams Park, the guest speaker was our favorite historian, David McCullough. He wrote the best seller, John Adams, a few years ago and has a slip from Abigail’s rose bush planted in his Music street backyard.
Olivia Larsen, over at the library, reports that tomorrow at 2:30 p.m., kids and families are invited to their monthly Lego club. On Thursday at 4 p.m., Christina Montoya will lead a Cuban dance presentation and class. Also, they have new tech help hours. On weekdays from 3:30 to 5 p.m., their I.T./reference librarian will be on hand to help with technical questions. Contact the library to schedule an appointment.
