Doris B. Daniels, 73, Ran Past and Repast Program
Doris Billings (Dabbie) Daniels died at her home in Vineyard Haven on Sunday, August 4, following a brief illness. She was the wife of George G. (Gus) Daniels and the mother of Katherine B. Daniels.
She was born May 23, 1929, in Boston to A.W.K. (Ken) Billings Jr. and Doris Colburn Billings. She was a graduate of Finch College and for many years was a flight attendant and supervisor with American Airlines. Later she was an interior decorator with W.J. Sloane in New York city. After her marriage in 1965, she lived in New York city, Greenwich, Conn., and Potomac, Md., before she and her husband moved permanently to the Vineyard in 1986.
Dabbie had been coming to the Island since she was a little girl. Her grandmother had a home in Vineyard Haven as did her family, but most summers were spent at the family's working farm in West Tisbury. After moving here permanently, she was active with the Dukes County Historical Society (now the Martha's Vineyard Historical Society) and ran the Past and Repast program for several years. She also served as a vice president of that organization.
Besides her husband and daughter, she is survived by two nephews, Richard Billings of California and David Billings of Texas, and their families. Her only brother, A.W.K. (Mike) Billings 3rd, predeceased her.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, August 14, at 2 p.m. in Oak Grove cemetery in Vineyard Haven. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Martha's Vineyard Historical Society, P.O. Box 1310, Edgartown, MA 02539.
