Selma Hughes Root, 89, Was Oak Bluffs Native

Selma (Sally) Hughes Root, 89, died March 25 at her home in Riverwoods at Exeter Retirement Community.

She was born in Oak Bluffs on July 21, 1913 to John Hawksworth and A. Elizabeth (Fraser) Hughes. She was graduated from Oak Bluffs High School and Chandler Business School in Boston. She married Clarence (Square) Root on Nov. 12, 1938 at Trinity Methodist Church in Oak Bluffs. He died in January of 1994.

Sally loved entertaining, knitting, traveling and especially the Vineyard, where she returned every year to spend time with her family and friends. Although she lived in five places during her life, Sally always considered the Vineyard home.

She is survived by daughters and sons in law Linda and Edward Golding of Hadley and Sandra and David Meldrum of Andover; grandchildren Jennifer and Dawn Meldrum, Isaac and Sarah Golding and Susan Anderson; a great-granddaughter, Isabel Anderson, and brothers Robert H. Hughes of Oak Bluffs and John T. Hughes of Vineyard Haven.

A graveside service on the Vineyard will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be made to Riverwoods at Exeter, 7 Riverwoods Drive, Exeter, NH 03833.
