Thomas W. Burgess Was Veteran of Korean War

Thomas W. Burgess, 71, of Aquinnah died unexpectedly on Thursday, April 3, at St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford. He was the husband of Maureen Fitzpatrick Burgess.

Born and reared in New Bedford, he was the son of the late Thomas Burgess and Marion Stoll Burgess of Fairhaven. He lived in Amherst, N.H., and Aquinnah after the Korean War.

A graduate of Holy Family High School, Mr. Burgess served four years in the U.S. Navy in submarine service during the Korean War. Upon his return, he was graduated from Boston College with a BS in business administration. He worked for General Motors, IBM and several other high-technology companies. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and family and he also enjoyed sailing.

He is survived by his wife; his mother; a son, Thomas J. Burgess of Portsmouth, R.I.; a daughter, Mary Byrnes of Manchester, N.H.; a brother, Karl Burgess of Aquinnah; three grandchildren, Amy Byrnes of Manchester, N.H., and Cameron Burgess and Thomas Cole Burgess, both of Portsmouth, R.I.; and several nieces.

A memorial mass was held at 9 a.m. Monday, April 7, in St. James Church, New Bedford. All other arrangements are private under the direction of the Donaghy-Hathaway Funeral Home, 465 County street, New Bedford.
