Catherine J. Smith Was Avid Cook and Gardener
Catherine J. (Kit) Smith of Edgartown died unexpectedly Saturday, May 10, at her home. She was 64. She was the wife of Michael F. Smith.
Kit was born in New Bedford on Sept. 9, 1938, the daughter of the late Edward and Bertha (LaRue) Eastwood.
She was graduated from the New Bedford High School and went on for two years of additional schooling at Kinyon and Campbell Business School. She worked as a waitress for various restaurants in the New Bedford area. Kit and Michael were married on Sept. 16, 1972. They started Smith Upholstery in New Bedford and in 1976 moved their business and their family to Martha's Vineyard. Kit worked for Morning Glory Farm in the greenhouse as well as the farm stand. She was an avid cook, and enjoyed clamming, scalloping and spending time with her grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughter, Beth Ann Serusa, and her husband, Dan, of West Tisbury; one son, Louis G. Smith of Oak Bluffs; four grandchildren, Katrina L. Smith, Justin A. Smith, Stacey M. Smith and Stephen T. Serusa, and one great-granddaughter, Sayde M. Clidence; a daughter in law, Barbara Smith of Vineyard Haven; one brother, Hartley Eastwood of Warwick, R.I., and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, May 13, 2003 in the New Westside Cemetery, Edgartown. Donations in Kit's memory may be made to the MSPCA, P.O. Box 2097, Edgartown, MA 02539. Arrangements are under the care of the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home.
