Najeeb Halaby, 87, Was Summer Island Resident

Najeeb E. Halaby, former head of the Federal Aviation Administration, past president of Pan American Airlines, and the father of Queen Noor, wife of the late King Hussein of Jordan, died Wednesday at his home in McLean, Va., of congestive heart failure. He was 87 years old.

A pioneering test pilot in World War II, Mr. Halaby, appointed to the FAA in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy, was a prominent figure in government and society in Washington, D.C. He held federal jobs in both military security and foreign affairs.

A longtime Vineyard seasonal resident, Mr. Halaby had a South Shore home off Jacob's Neck Road in Edgartown.

His daughter, Lisa, became Queen Noor al Hussein when she married King Hussein in 1978. The royal couple were guests on the Vineyard at Mr. Halaby's summer home.
