Clarence N. Ward Jr., 83, Served in World War II
Clarence Nathaniel Ward Jr. of Hillside Village, Vineyard Haven died Wednesday, Nov. 12, at the age of 83.
He was born Jan. 3, 1920 in Vineyard Haven, the son of Clarence Ward Sr. and Nellie Norton. He was predeceased by his eight sisters, Anita Maciel, Alice W. Jernegan, Claire Cryer, Eva Ward, Harriet Ward, Doris Ward, Eunice Ward and Nellie Ward.
Mr. Ward was a carpenter for Dugan Construction and DeSorcy Company. There after he worked for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Public Works at the Martha's Vineyard airport for 15 years before he retired in 1982.
He was a World War II veteran, serving in the Marine Corps. He was a 50-year member of the American Legion.
He was also a 50-year member of Christ United Methodist Church in Vineyard Haven. He enjoyed watching the Boston Red Sox and debating politics.
He is survived by a daughter, Carole Maveety of Vineyard Haven; a son, Herbert Ward of Vineyard Haven, and four grandchildren, Melinda Maveety, Kimberly Maveety, Robert Ward and Michael Ward, all of Vineyard Haven. He was predeceased by a son, Clarence N. Ward 3rd.
A graveside service will be held in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Tisbury on Tuesday, Nov. 18, at a time to be decided. Donations may be made in his memory to the American Legion Post 257, P.O.
