Jean Swift, Age 83, Was Pianist, Church Treasurer

Jean Swift died peacefully at her home in Vineyard Haven on Jan. 20, surrounded by her friends and loved ones, following a long illness. Born in Tisbury on Dec. 26, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Franklin Holmes Swift and Sophia (Heyermann) Swift and the granddaughter of Holmes and Rhoda (Luce) Swift.

Jean was a 1938 graduate of Tisbury High School and a graduate of Bryant College in Rhode Island. Before returning to the Vineyard in the 1970s, she worked for financial institutions in Providence and Boston and lived on Beacon Hill. Upon her return to her home on the Island, she worked at the Martha's Vineyard National Bank, retiring as an assistant trust officer.

Jean was a member, and served as treasurer, of Christ United Methodist Church, Vineyard Haven. She was the last regent in the Seacoast Defence Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, past Worthy Matron of the Oriental Chapter #73 (Order of the Eastern Star) Masona #134, a member of the St. John Society of the Holy Ghost Association and pianist of the West Tisbury Grange.

A visitation will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24, at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home in Oak Bluffs followed by a noon funeral home service with the Rev. Nancy Wnek officiating. Interment will immediately follow beside her parents in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Tisbury.
