Eileen F. Kraus Graduated From Tisbury High School

Eileen F. (Smith) Kraus, of West Dennis, died Nov. 13 at Massachusetts General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Carl Kraus and longtime companion of the late Victor Craig, who died in 1979.

Mrs. Kraus was born, raised and educated on Martha's Vineyard, graduating from Tisbury High School. She attended Mass State College, which is now the University of Massachusetts, and Simmons College, where she received a library degree.

During World War II she was a social worker with the American Red Cross on Long Island, N.Y. After the war she went to work for the Veterans' Administration as medical librarian and worked for the administration in Illinois, Indiana and Montrose, N.Y., as chief librarian. She retired in 1978 and moved to West Dennis.

Mrs. Kraus volunteered at Cape Cod Community College and worked at Brooks Free Library for more than 20 years.

She enjoyed animals and wildlife and was an avid reader. She was a member of the Cape and Islands Historic Society, the Cape Cod Genealogy Society, and the Friendly Guild of the West Dennis Community Church.

She is survived by a sister, Christine S. Wood of Harwich, four nieces, a nephew and several grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She was the sister of the late Mary J. Nevin.

Visiting hours were held Tuesday at the Doane, Beal and Ames Funeral Home in South Dennis. Services were Wednesday at West Dennis Community Church, and interment was yesterday in Oak Grove Cemetery on the Vineyard.
