G. Geoffrey Young Was Hartford Stock Broker
G. Geoffrey Young of Kensington, Conn., died Saturday, Oct. 29, at the Jerome Home where he was currently residing. He was 90 years old.
Mr. Young was the son of the late Margaret and Louis Young of New Britain, Conn. He attended The Choate School and Williams College. He was an avid sports enthusiast, enjoying golf, tennis and skiing. In his youth, he enjoyed sailing off the shores of Martha's Vineyard; he won the Katama class at the Nantucket Regatta in 1933, an event that celebrated the tricentennial of the founding of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. In his senior years, he played tennis until the age of 88 with members of his club as well as doubles at the Newington Tennis Center.
Mr. Young worked for Stanley Works as a missionary salesman before the war. He spent the war years as director of priority controls at Fairchild Aircraft in Hagerstown, Md. In 1946, he was president of Tempro Inc., producing housewares items. In 1951 he returned to Stanley Works to help develop modern sales promotion and training programs. In 1961, Mr. Young left Stanley to take up his lifelong interest in investments and was a stock broker in Hartford, Conn., until his retirement in 1977.
Mr. Young was a lifetime member of the Shuttle Meadow Country Club, an original member of the Saturnites and a member of the Choate Club. He was also a past campaign chairman for the American Cancer Society and the Boys Club, as well as a trustee of the William Hart Fund at the South Congregational Church.
A historian and art collector, he enjoyed his many travels throughout the world. In the past 25 years, Mr. Young was a frequent student at Elderhostel Programs in the United States as well as Europe, thoroughly enjoying these educational experiences.
He is survived by his wife, Jean (Platt) Young; his son, Todd P. Young of Stillwater, Minn.; a daughter and son in law, Gigi and Wayne Kurth of Unionville; two grandchildren, Kyle and Alyssa Kurth; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Howard Young and Bill Young.
Funeral services were held at the South Congregational-First Baptist Church in New Britain. Interment was private at Oak Hill Cemetery in Southington. The family wishes to express their deepest thanks to the staff of the Jerome Home for the wonderful care he received there.
