Magdelena Honig, 91, Worked in Publishing

Magdelena (Lena) Honig of Edgartown died Wednesday, Dec. 7, at the Martha's Vineyard Hospital. She was 91 years old.

She was born in New York city on Feb. 19, 1914, the daughter of Frank Feil Sr. and Elizabeth Andreas, both of whom were Austrian-Hungarian immigrants.

She spent her teenage years in Stamford, Conn., and then returned to New York city to work at McMillan Publishing; she was a proofreader for Margaret Mitchell's novel Gone With the Wind, and by the time she left the publishing house she had been made an assistant editor. Lena then became an executive assistant working at Morrissey Plumbing, also in New York.

She married Arthur Honig while living in New York, and they summered in Copake, N.Y., until his retirement. They moved to Martha's Vineyard in 1968, living on Metell's Way in Edgartown. Soon after Arthur died in 1980 she moved in with her daughter on Herring Creek Road. She was the companion of Peter Bauer for many years before his death in 1992.

Lena was a wonderful mother and grandmother who will be remembered for her cooking, baking, knitting and gardening. She was a frequent visitor to the Edgartown Senior Day Program.

She is survived by her son, Arthur Honig of Edgartown; her daughter, Estelle Burnham of Edgartown; three grandchildren, William A. Honig of Hubbardston, Deirdre-Ann Clegg of North Carolina and Christine Honig of Edgartown, and a great-grandchild, Meg.

A celebration of her life will be at a later date.

Contributions may be made in her memory to the Boys' and Girls' Club of Martha's Vineyard, P.O. Box 654, Edgartown, MA 02539 or to the Edgartown Senior Day Program, P.O. Box 1295, Edgartown, MA 02539.
