Margaret J. Landers, 49, Tended Circuit Avenue

Margaret Jean Landers of Oak Bluffs died on Monday, Dec. 19, at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. She was 49.

Margaret was born in Oak Bluffs on Dec. 3, 1956, to her loving parents, Herbert A. and Elsie (Gross) Landers. She was a graduate of the Martha's Vineyard Regional High School.

Margaret loved her two cats, and she enjoyed working in her yard and garden and running errands for parents.

She also was a well-known fixture on the streets of Oak Bluffs, where every evening in the summer she helped her father sweep the sidewalks along Circuit avenue -- a job she did for more than a decade. A 2002 Gazette feature about the pair took note of her thoughtfulness: "Margaret is not on the town payroll. She simply knows that an additional broom on Circuit avenue means less work for her aging father."

In addition to her loving parents, Margaret is survived by her daughter, Amy Landers, a sister, Patricia Sylvia, and two grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, Dec. 23, at 11 a.m. at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Oak Bluffs.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements are under the care of the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home on the Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road in Oak Bluffs.
