Marion Ruth Schiebel, 89, Was Artist and Professor

Marion Ruth Schiebel died Friday, Dec. 30. She was 89.

Marion was born Feb. 5, 1916, the daughter of Charles and Molly (Miller) Margolis in Brooklyn, N.Y. She received her bachelor of arts degree from Brooklyn College, her master's degree of fine arts from Columbia University, and completed her doctoral course work at New York University.

On June 20, 1937, in Manhattan, Marion married Judson Schiebel. They resided for several years in Brooklyn before moving to Caldwell, N.J.

Marion was a talented artist, focusing primarily on painting though equally skilled in sculpture, woodcuts, etchings and drawings. Marion encouraged many students in these endeavors as an art professor for more than 15 years at Montclair State University.

Retirement years were spent in Hoboken, N.J., and at her beloved Lagoon cottage on Martha's Vineyard.

Marion touched many lives, inspiring each of them with her keen intellect, artistic sensibility, adventuresome nature, good humor and love of learning. She will be deeply missed.

She is survived by her husband, Judson, of Madison, Wis.; her three children, Barbara (Dennis) Lockwood Wagner of Madison, Jonathan Schiebel of Dusseldorf, Germany, and Laura (David) Kline of Jacksonville, Fla.; four grandchildren, Brian (Brenda) Lockwood of Minneapolis, Minn., Keith Lockwood of Bozeman, Mont., Tammy (David) Priest of Charlotte, N.C., and Mae Kline of Orlando, Fla.; two great-grandchildren, Nathan and Olivia Priest; her sister, Bernice Bloch of Delray Beach, Fla.; numerous nieces and nephews; and close friends Carole and Robert Bellasalma of Caldwell. Marion was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Julian Margolis.

Private family services were held. Memorials may be made to Oxfam, Doctors Without Borders and Mogen David Adom.

Arrangements were under the care of the Cress Funeral & Cremation Service in Madison.
