Peter J. Duart, 57, Was Longtime SSA Employee

Peter J. Duart of Vineyard Haven died Monday, Jan. 16, at home surrounded by his family after a long illness. He was 57.

Peter was the husband of Barbara Ann (Sabino) Duart and was married for 40 years.

He was a lifelong Island resident, born July 17, 1948, in Oak Bluffs, the son of Joseph F. Duart Jr. and Hilda King.

He attended Tisbury Elementary School and was graduated from the Martha's Vineyard Regional High School in 1966. He received his CPA degree from Bryant College in Rhode Island in 1969.

Peter worked for the Steamship Authority for 35 years until his illness forced him to retire. He was also the owner of Peter J. Duart Tax Service.

Peter had an active role in Vineyard life. He was a past manager and member of the Holy Ghost Society, a volunteer for Camp Safe Haven and a member of the Order of the Redman, formerly in Vineyard Haven, the Elk's Club and the Lion's Club.

His passion was for sports; he loved to watch and attend the Patriot and Red Sox games. He was an avid fisherman and hunter.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara A. Duart; one son, Peter J. Sabino Duart of Vineyard Haven; two daughters, Rebecca Jane Stevens and her partner, Michael Cass, of Vineyard Haven and Kim Elizabeth Thomas of Edgartown; 10 grandchildren, Katherine, Brittany, Stephanie, Kaleena and Brianna Strelecki, Tonya, Danny, Briar and Hunter Thomas, and Amiris Timmons; his brother, Joseph Duart 3rd, and his wife, Dotty of Vineyard Haven; three sisters, Karen Murphy, Joan Andrews and her husband, David, and Brenda Duart, all of Vineyard Haven; his mother in law, Elsie Silva of Wareham; and a close family friend, Angela Deltorto. He was predeceased by a brother, Michael Duart.

His funeral mass was celebrated in Our Lady Star of the Sea Church on Massasoit avenue in Oak Bluffs on Wednesday, Jan. 18 at 11 a.m. Interment followed in the Oak Grove Cemetery on State Road in Vineyard Haven, with a collation at the Portuguese American Club afterward.
