Edith Marie Spencer of Orleans died peacefully in her sleep on Jan. 20. She was 92 years old.

Edith was born April 15, 1913, in Westerly, R.I., the daughter of Seth C. and Edith (Brown) Johnson. She trained for the ballet from an early age. As a child she traveled with her family to South Dakota, to live for a time. In 1934 she met and married Elwood S. Spencer. They lived in New York with their two daughters and later moved to Chilmark. Edith divorced in 1947. She later married briefly and lived in Nashua, N.H., for several years before making her permanent home on the Cape in 1965.

Edith loved music and dance. She taught ballet classes while living on the Island. She was a member of the West Tisbury Congregational Church and of the Grange.

She was predeceased by two brothers, S. Stuart Johnson of Sheridan, Wyo., and Robert Johnson of Willimantic, Conn.

She is survived by her two daughters, Sylvan J. Spencer of Evanston, Ill., and Carol (Mrs. David) Tilton of Rye, N.H. She is also survived by five grandchildren: David Tilton Jr. and his wife, Kim, Desiree Tilton and Daniel Tilton and his wife, Luellen, all of New Hampshire; Deidre Tilton Sanborn and her husband, Craig, of Maine; and Dawn Tilton Tarmey and her husband, John, of South Carolina. There are 10 great-grandchildren, Tyler, Meghan, Camille, David, Bryan, Rachel, Benjamin, Kendra, Carrie and Zebulon. Two cousins, Jane Jordan of Storrs, Conn., and Bette Stillman of Pawcatuck, Conn., also survive her as well as four nieces.

Following cremation, interment will be at River Bend Cemetery in Westerly.
