Mark M. Smith, 67, Was Combat Medic in Berlin

Mark M. Smith of Edgartown died peacefully April 5 at Massachusetts General Hospital of complications resulting from congestive heart failure. He was 67.

Mark was born at the Martha's Vineyard Hospital on March 5, 1939, the son of Marguerite and Stanley Smith. Mark proudly served his country with the U.S. Army and was assigned to the first infantry division as a combat medic at Checkpoint Charlie in Germany during the Berlin crisis airlift.

Upon Mark's return home from the service, he became a bartender for several years and then was employed by Marvin Burnham in the masonry trade. In later years, Mark was employed by Island Rubbish Service and Browning Ferris Industries until his retirement in 2004. He was an avid sports fan and always kept up with the latest sports news, which he shared with his many friends. Mark was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Holy Ghost Society, where he spent much of his retirement time playing cribbage.

Mark was predeceased by his parents, brothers William S. Smith and George Smith and sisters Katherine and Dianne.

He is survived by brothers Nelson C. Smith of Edgartown and Michael K. Smith of Edgartown and sisters Mary Larsen and Carole Larsen of Chilmark. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Interment of Mark's cremains will take place at the Smith family Cemetery at Red Hill off Barnes Road in Oak Bluffs at a date to be announced.
