Susan N. Barrett Loved Cooking, Caring for All

Susan N. (Toomey) Barrett of Northfield died Friday at home. She was 49 years old.

She was born in Ridgewood, N.J., on Jan. 19, 1957, the daughter of Richard and Nancy (Griebel) Steves. She had lived in Northfield for six years. She was a member of the First Parish Unitarian Church of Northfield. She had an infectious laugh. She enjoyed cooking, animals and the outdoors, and taking care of others.

She is survived by her children, Damien Wood Toomey, and Teagan R. Barrett and Karina N. Barrett, both of Northfield, and her brothers and sisters, Elizabeth Toomey of North Adams, Linda Toomey-Steves and her husband, Robert, of West Haven, Conn., Laurie Grelle and her husband, Doug, of Little Egg Harbor, N.J., Katie Jordan and her husband, Steven, of Edgartown, James Steves of San Diego, Calif., Wood E. Steves and his wife, Kristen, of Los Angeles, Calif., Kevin Hall of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Sean Steves of Edgartown.

A memorial service will be held May 21 at 3 p.m. at the First Parish Unitarian Church in Northfield. The Rev. Steve Wilson will officiate. A second memorial on the Island will be announced at a later date.

Interment will be at the convenience of the family; there are no calling hours. Arrangements are under the care of the Kidder Funeral Home in Northfield.
