Henry Pedersen, 81, Had Lifelong Love for Music

Henry (Harry) Rendell Pedersen, an 18-year resident of Martha's Vineyard, died June 15 after a long illness. He was 81.

Harry was born March 16, 1925, in Westwood, N.J. As a boy he was a member of the famous St. Thomas Boys Choir, an experience which began a lifelong love of choral music. He was a graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy and proudly served in the Merchant Marine during World War II and in the U.S. Naval Reserve. Harry was very active in the affairs of his local churches wherever he located over the years, in addition to singing in community and church choirs.

After a long career in the marine insurance business Harry and his wife, Sylvia, retired to the Island, where he was active in the Island Community Chorus and Christ United Methodist Church. He was a pillar of strength in spirit, and secure in his faith in God. His wit, charm, grace and strength will be missed by all who knew him.

Harry is survived by his loving wife, Sylvia, brothers Ronald and John, sons Keith and Theodore, and three grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, James.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 24, at Christ United Methodist Church on Church street in Vineyard Haven.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Christ United Methodist Church.

Arrangements are under the care of the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home in Oak Bluffs.
