Elwyn V. Chesley Jr., 88, Circumnavigated Globe

Elwyn V. (Ches) Chesley Jr., a lifelong resident of Rowayton and Darien, Conn., died on Thursday, July 6, at Carlyle Place in Macon, Ga. He was 88.

Ches was born Jan. 25, 1918, in Swampscott, the son of Elwyn V. Chesley and Sadie May Tuck Chesley. They moved to Rowayton, Conn., following his birth.

He attended the Thomas School in Rowayton and was graduated from the Suffield School (now Suffield Academy) in Suffield, Conn.

He circumnavigated the globe in the 92-foot schooner Yankee from 1936 to 1938. He attended Clark University and spent four years, seven months in the Army during World War II, with service in the European theatre. He left the Army with the rank of major.

Ches spent 43 years in the industrial and commercial real estate business with Pierson and Smith in Stamford, Conn.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Emma (Pat); their daughter, Deborah C. Jones of Macon, Ga.; his grandson, Thomas 4th; two great-grandchildren, Emily and Thomas V. of Macon, Ga., and his grandson, Christopher, of Menemsha.

Memorial services were held Saturday, July 8, in the chapel of Hart's Mortuary in Macon with the Rev. Wesley Smith officiating.
