Benjamin Sutherland, 18, Was an Aspiring Artist

Benjamin Sutherland, 18, died accidentally from a fall on July 14, 2006, while working as a crew member on board the Schooner Alabama of Vineyard Haven.

He was born in Cambridge on April 23, 1988, the son of Mark and Dominique Sutherland. Benjamin grew up in Concord and attended the local Thoreau Elementary School, Peabody Middle School, and graduated from Concord-Carlisle High School in June 2006.

Benjamin showed great potential as a scrimshander while working on his senior project. He planned to attend art school, but was taking a year off to explore life.

He enjoyed snowboarding, sailing, computer games, drawing, reading, music, playing the guitar, photography and being with friends.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by a sister, Juliette Sutherland, of Concord; his maternal grandmother, Carmen Laprique of Le Mans, France; his paternal grandparents, Barbara and Peter Sutherland of South Yarmouth; an aunt, Fay Sutherland of Somerville; two uncles, Daniel Sutherland and his wife, Elizabeth, of Nantucket, and Ambler Thompson of Frederick, Md.; and several cousins, Morgan Sutherland and Peter de Florio of Nantucket, and Anna and Helena Thompson of Frederick, Md.

He was also the nephew of the late Amy Sutherland Thompson.

Visiting hours will be held from 3 to 6 p.m., Friday, July 21, at the Joseph Dee & Son Funeral Home, 27 Bedford street, Concord.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 22, at the First Parish in Concord, 20 Lexington Road, Concord Center. Interment will be in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord.
