Louise Hughes, 88, Was Company Vice President

Louise Clemmey Hughes of Fall River and Oak Bluffs died Friday at her residence on the Vineyard. She was the wife of the late Leonard J. Hughes. She was 88.

She was born in Fall River, a daughter of the late Andrew Clemmey and the late Mary Quirk Clemmey, and was a lifelong resident of the city though she summered in Oak Bluffs for many years.

Mrs. Hughes was vice president of the tank manufacturing company J.L. Clemmey Company for many years, retiring in 1980. She was a graduate of BMC Durfee High School, Class of 1935, and the former Thibodeau Business School. She was a communicant of Holy Name Church in Fall River and Our Lady Star of the Sea in Oak Bluffs.

Mrs. Hughes was also a member of the Fall River Woman's Club, the Charlton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and the East Chop Beach Club. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, needlepoint, knitting and stitching.

She is survived by two sons, Robert L. Hughes of Ellijay, Ga., and Paul J. Hughes of Fall River; a daughter, Susan A. Hughes of South Natick; five grandchildren, Mark and Christopher Hughes, Susannah Eatz, and Scott and Erik Surface; three great-grandchildren, Jack Harlan, Connor James Hughes and Grace Eatz; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister and brother, Ruth Sullivan and James Q. Clemmey.

Her funeral will be held Wednesday, Sept. 20, at 9 a.m. at the Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute at Cherry Place in Fall River; it will be followed by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in Holy Name Church. Interment will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, also in Fall River.
