Joseph (Jeff) Mattison 3rd, Summered in Edgartown

Joseph (Jeff) Mattison 3rd, 62, of Edgartown and Osterville, died suddenly on Oct. 4 after delivering a boat from Martha's Vineyard to Newport, R.I.

Born in Boston and raised in Chestnut Hill, Jeff was a graduate of The Dexter School in Brookline and Milton Academy. He was a member of the class of 1966, graduating in 1968 from Princeton University, where he was a member of the lightweight crew team. A certified financial advisor and a graduate of the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia, Jeff worked in the field of finance. He was an active and dedicated member of the Edgartown Yacht Club, the Chappaquiddick Beach Club, the Edgartown Golf Club, and the New York Yacht Club.

In 1973 Jeff was married to Alice (Sherry) Donahue at the Edgartown Yacht Club. For many years thereafter they lived aboard their boat, cruising through the Caribbean Islands, especially St. Barts, which the family continues to visit. An avid, lifelong sailor, Jeff spent many hours on the water. He was happiest tinkering with a boat engine or trimming a sail. His intense intelligence, quick wit, integrity and loyalty to his family and friends will be sorely missed.

A devoted father and husband, he is survived by his wife of 33 years, Alice Donahue Mattison, and two children, Joseph Mattison 4th and Alice Moir Mattison. He is also survived by his father, Joseph Mattison Jr. and four siblings: Mary Wells, Peter Mattison, Debbie Angotti and Bruce Mattison. He was predeceased by his mother, Elizabeth Moir Mattison.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14 at the Federated Church in Edgartown. Visiting hours will be held on Friday evening, Oct. 13 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home in Oak Bluffs.
