Alzira (Elsie) Silva, 85, Loved Visiting Island

Alzira (Elsie) Silva, 85, of West Wareham, died at Falmouth Hospital on Oct. 17.

She was the wife of the late Edward P. Silva.

Born in New Bedford, she was the daughter of Jules P. and Rose (Dias) Tremblay.

She attended the New Bedford public schools. During World War II, she worked at the Goodyear factory to do her part for the war effort. She later retired from Rodney Metals after 25 years of service.

After retirement, she realized it was not for her. She went on to work at May Optical and Leslie's Pharmacy. She was a seasonal employee at Ocean Spray throughout her lifetime.

She enjoyed volunteering at the Wareham Public Library and helping senior citizens. She was an avid knitter and enjoyed reading, swimming, camping and visiting her many relatives and friends on the Vineyard. She was a lifetime member of the Holy Ghost Association in Oak Bluffs.

She was pre-deceased by her son in law, Peter J. Duart of Vineyard Haven; a sister, Irene Borgess, and her husband, Liberal Borgess.

Survivors include her daughter, Barbara A. Duart of Vineyard Haven; three grandchildren, Rebecca J. Duart and her fiance, Michael Cass, of Vineyard Haven, Peter J.S. Duart of Vineyard Haven, and Kim Thomas of Vineyard Haven; a brother, George Tremblay, and his wife, Lola, of Beallsville, Ohio; 11 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; a very special friend, a second daughter, Beverly Perry and her husband, Jim, of Acushnet.

Funeral services were held Friday, Oct. 20, at St. Patrick's Church in Wareham. Interment was at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
