William C. Wiswall, M.D., 82, a longtime resident of Lynnfield, died Feb. 8 at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

Born in Newton on Nov. 3, 1924, he was the son of Edward H. and Anna Cobb Wiswall.

Dr. Wiswall was a graduate of Governor Dummer Academy. He attended Bates College for two years before transferring and graduating from Bowdoin College. He graduated from Boston University Medical School.

Dr. Wiswall was a pediatrician. He began his practice in Lynnfield in 1955 and later expanded it to Peabody in 1965. He retired from his medical practice in 2002. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and was called back to serve in the Army during the Korean conflict.

He was a member of the Salem Country Club for more than 42 years, past member of the Edgartown Golf Club and a member of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States.

Dr. Wiswall was the past chief of pediatrics at Lynn Union Hospital for over 20 years, past president of the Medical staff at North Shore Children's Hospital, and was the Middleton School Physician for over 30 years. He was a clinical instructor of pediatrics at Tufts University School of Medicine. In the town of Lynnfield, he served for 26 years on the Center Water District and also was a library trustee.

Survivors include his wife, Judith A. Birchenough Wiswall; his four children, William C. Wiswall Jr. of Lynnfield, Carol T. Altman of Palm Harbor, Fla., Lucy J. Wiswall of Austin, Tex. and Martha C. Wiswall of Dallas, Tex.; his six grandchildren, W. Ambrose Coddington, Zachary Altman, Tara Altman, Robyn Altman, Jeremiah Buchanan and Sabrina Buchanan; and one great-grandchild, Allison Altman.

He was predeceased by his daughter Ruthanna Buchanan, and his sister Martha H. Wiswall.

A memorial mass was celebrated in Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Grove street, Lynnfield at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Calling hours were at the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale avenue, Wakefield on Tuesday.
