Bernice Tilton Benway died surrounded by family at Martha's Vineyard Hospital on March 25 after a brief illness.

Bernice was born in Tisbury on March 29, 1920. She was the daughter of Emma Potter Tilton and Capt. Thomas Tilton.

Bernice worked for many years as a bookkeeper for various businesses, and for many years at the Art Cliff Diner in Vineyard Haven. She will be remembered as a loving caregiver to many family members, both young and old.

Bernice enjoyed knitting garments and blankets for gifts, and solving crossword puzzles. She was a devoted Red Sox fan.

Survivors include daughters Susan Jenkinson of Oak Bluffs and Linda Benway of Falmouth; sons Bret Benway and wife Patricia of Tisbury and Leslie Benway and wife Mary of Brewer, Me.; sisters Alma Lowe and husband Lee of Brooksville, Fla. and Dot Howard of Carver; many nieces and nephews; 10 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a sister, Mildred (Tilton) Huntington; brothers Todd Tilton and Leslie Tilton; step-brother Thomas Desrosier; and former husband Harold Benway.
